Rogers Begins Phasing Out 3G: What It Means for Your Security System
Rogers has officially begun retiring its 3G (UMTS/HSPA) network as of August 7, 2025, with full decommissioning expected by the end of the year.
Why Is Rogers Shutting Down 3G?
As cellular technology advances, maintaining older networks becomes costly and less efficient. With 4G (LTE) and 5G now the standard across Canada, Rogers is reallocating its 3G spectrum to improve coverage, increase capacity, and deliver faster speeds.
This decision is entirely an initiative by Rogers and follows broader industry trends. Other carriers, including Bell and Telus, are also retiring their 3G networks. As a local security and monitoring provider, Alarm Systems relies on these carrier networks to communicate signals—but the decision to sunset 3G rests with Rogers, not us.
Who Could Be Affected?
Older Phones and Non-VoLTE Devices
Devices that only run on 3G or lack Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support may attempt to fall back to 2G (where available). This can result in dropped calls, failed text messages, or no service at all.
Security and Alarm Monitoring Equipment
Systems that use Rogers 2G/3G cellular communicators may stop functioning as early as August 7, 2025. If your communicator is 3G-only, signals may no longer reach our monitoring centre—causing trouble alerts or communication failures.
Other Smart Devices
Tablets, smartwatches, and even some home phone devices still using 3G will lose cellular connectivity. These devices will only work on Wi-Fi until upgraded.
